Situated within the heart of Barcelona's Sarriá neighborhood, Casa Grases is a respectful refurbishment of a late 18th century residence with a contemporary feel.
The project aimed to restore a pre-existing residence to a multiple housing building with a distribution that responded to the demands of modern life. The project also included the extension of a new building and the construction of a new detached house. The overall concept of the architectural project was to maintain an almost reverential respect for the original architecture. The extension is a neutral element that does not contrast with the visual power of the house but enhances it through a reinterpretation of the original architectural elements. The detailing of connections between the old and the new creates a visual and spatial equilibrium with the pre-existing architecture which allows us to perceive it as a whole. Hence, the solemnity of the original architecture coexists with the pure lines of the modern architecture. The result is a union between the craftsmanship of the past and the comfort and technology that the XXI century offers.
The structural work was of remarkable complexity. In addition to the surgical rehabilitation of the existing structures, which ranged from repair to replacement, the project included adapting the underground spaces for the car park and the new construction. As a result of the creation of the new building, the existing structure has been adapted to the current accessibility requirements, allowing the original architecture to perform new functions and bringing life back to a nearly abandoned building.
